His Life & Legacy

Karl F. von Knoblauch, 91, of Camillus, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, April 19 at the Syracuse VA Medical Center. Born and raised in Poughkeepsie, he was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School and attended the College of William and Mary. He proudly served four years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS NIPMUC (ATF-157) and USS WACCAMAW (AO-109).

Karl was a dedicated member of many organizations throughout his life, giving generously of his time and leadership. He was a proud member of the Shriners Tigris Temple in Syracuse, where he served as Potentate from 2005–2006. He was also a member of Syracuse Court No. 79, ROJ, serving as Past Director and Past Impresario. Karl was a longtime member of the Scottish Rite Masons, belonging to the Central City Bodies, Valley of Syracuse and the Supreme Council, 32° for over 60 years. He served as Past Commander of the American Legion Camillus Knifetown Post 1540 and as Past President of the German American Society of Central New York. For many years, he hosted the "Melodies of Germany" radio show and was a dedicated apheresis donor for the American Red Cross.

Karl had many talents and hobbies that brought him great joy, including painting, drawing, woodworking, home improvement projects, cooking, and brewing. He was an avid reader and faithfully watched Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune every evening. He traveled extensively through his service with the Shriners and the Navy and took great pride in his German heritage, especially enjoying trips to Germany with family and friends. A proud patriot, Karl loved his country and proudly flew the American flag. He was known for his wonderful sense of humor, his generosity, and the love he shared with family and friends.

Karl was predeceased by his parents, Cornelius and Ella; sister, Ruth Lennon; and brothers, Harry and Paul.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Marjorie; son, Brian of Camillus; daughter, Kari (Jay) Borowiecki of Pipersville, PA; grandchildren, Jakob, Anna, and Ella Borowiecki; son, Karl (Ally) and family of Jamesville; daughter, Gail (Randy) Benjamin and family of Odessa; brother, Martin, of Portland, ME; and several nieces and nephews.
